Weather forces tourney changes

The winter weather was enough to knock out nearly all of the prep basketball schedule for Monday night and force a lot of rapid rescheduling of conference tournament opening games.

The only game still to be played tonight is the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference girls quarterfinal matchup between Southern Wayne and Goldsboro. That game is slated to start at 7 p.m. in the Cougar Den. Admission is $5 at the door and no passes will be accepted.

The other ECC quarterfinal games -- South Central at Kinston, West Carteret at Charles B. Aycock and Eastern Wayne at home to West Craven -- will all be played on Tuesday. The Kinston and Eastern Wayne games will be played as the first of a girls-boys doubleheader at 6 p.m., with Kinston's boys meeting Goldsboro and Eastern Wayne's boys taking on South Central at 7:30 p.m.

Aycock's meeting with West Carteret will take place at 7 p.m. The girls semifinals will go on as scheduled on Wednesday, weather permitting.

The Eastern Plains 2-A Conference has moved it's Monday schedule -- doubleheader at Greene Central -- to Tuesday. The Ram boys will take on SouthWest Edgecombe after Greene Central's girls meet South Lenoir. Tip-off for the first game is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

The Carolina 1-A Conference has moved its girls opening-round schedule to Wednesday, with North Duplin and Spring Creek matching up at North Johnston High School at 6 p.m. and the Lady Panthers meeting Ayden-Grifton at 7:30 p.m. In Rosewood, the Lady Eagles will take on Princeton at 7 p.m.

Locals fare well at state swim meet

RALEIGH -- Local swimmers took part in the N.C. High School Athletic Association state swim meet at the N.C. State pool Friday and Saturday.

Eastern Wayne's Billy Reed fared the best, with a fourth-place time in the 100 freestyle (51.29) and a seventh-place time in the 50 free (23.78). Ashley Robinson was seventh in the 500 free (5:35.94) and ninth in the 200 individual medley (2:25.30).

Michael Hallock was 20th in the 500 free (5:43.73) and the 400 free relay team of Rob Cagle, Garrett Turknett, Hallock and Reed took 11th (3:43.87). The girls 400 free relay team of Rachael Stoneburner, Stefanie Hallock, Hina New and Robinson was 15th (4:09.66).

The Warrior men finished 21st in the field, while the women were 22nd.

Charles B. Aycock swimmer Garrett Forrest was eight in the 100 free (58.62) and 12th in the 50 free (26.65).
