North Johnston's Helen Moore scored a game-high 17 points as the Panthers slipped past Rosewood 52-46 in a crucial Class 1-A Carolina Conference showdown at the Eagles' gymnasium.

Moore also had nine rebounds and six steals.

With the win, North Johnston (17-4, 7-3 Carolina 1-A) pulled within one-half game of Rosewood (14-3, 7-2) for second place in the conference heading into the final week of the season.

Both teams return to action on Tuesday with Rosewood traveling to North Duplin and the Panthers hosting Ayden-Grifton. The Eagles have a pivotal game with conference leader Farmville Central on Thursday at home.

Rosewood's Shanda White, playing her first extended minutes in several weeks due to a knee injury, led Rosewood with 12 points. Nikki Strawn added nine for the Eagles.

Lakisa McFadden chipped in 12 for North Johnston.

FARMVILLE -- Farmville Central's Megan Zullo scored 22 points as Farmville Central cruised to a 67-26 win over North Duplin at home on Friday.

The Lady Jaguars continued their stranglehold on the Class 1-A Carolina Conference as it improved to 19-1 overall and 9-0 in league play.

Lauren Blackmore led the Rebels (4-12, 3-8 Carolina 1-A) with nine points. Bethany Malcolm added eight.

North Duplin returns to action at home on Tuesday against Rosewood.

PINETOPS -- SouthWest Edgecombe's Tamara Hyman scored 29 points as the Lady Cougars continued their assault against Class 2-A Eastern Plains Conference play with a 63-53 victory over Greene Central.

SW Edgecombe (16-6 overall) remained unbeaten in conference play at 8-0.

Greene Central (7-15, 2-5 EPC 2-A) was led by Briana Stanton with 17 points, while Fernanda Brown contributed 11 and Teketia May chipped in 10.

The Rams travel to Tarboro on Tuesday.

ROCKY MOUNT -- Merely minutes into Wayne Country Day's girls game at Rocky Mount Academy, a leaky roof halted play for the evening.

The girls game was never completed and the boys game never started.

A make-up date will be scheduled next week. The Chargers are slated to take on Rocky Mount Academy on Wednesday at home.

Saints claim

ECC 3-A title

DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne's girls clinched the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference championship with a 56-23 win over Eastern Wayne on Friday.

Felicia Martin led the way for the Saints with 16 points, while Mercedes Price added nine.

"We played overall good defense in the game," Southern Wayne coach Clifton Broadhurst said.

The Lady Saints host Goldsboro on Tuesday.

Aycock tumbles

PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock's Shelly Lancaster scored eight points as the Lady Golden Falcons fell 35-28 at home to South Central on Friday.

Chelsie Jackson and Jasmine Dobbin chipped in seven points each for Aycock (3-5 Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference).

South Central's Ebony Waller led all scorers with 11 points.

The Golden Falcons travel to rival Eastern Wayne on Tuesday.
