Rosewood girls suffer first Carolina loss

FARMVILLE -- Rosewood's girls took Farmville Central down to the last four minutes before the Lady Jaguars went on a late run to beat the Lady Eagles 59-46 Friday night in a battle of Carolina 1-A Conference leaders.

The 18-4 run in the final four minutes was the difference as Rosewood (12-2, 5-1) had the lead for most of the game.

"Our girls expect to win," said Rosewood coach Jerry Narron, the former manager of major league baseball's Texas Rangers. "Our girls play with a lot of intensity and a lot of heart. They knew they were playing one of the best teams in the state."

Rosewood took its largest lead of the game as the second half opened at 25-18. Megan Zullo led the Lady Jags' comeback to tie the game before Jennifer Boren's basket at the end of the third period gave Rosewood a two-point lead.

Boren scored 19 points to lead Rosewood.

Gators drop North Duplin

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Spring Creek took out North Duplin 59-32 to improve to 4-2 in Class 1-A Carolina Conference play on Friday.

The Gators (7-10 overall) play host to Farmville Central on Tuesday.

North Duplin's Lauren Blackmore scored 19 points, while teammate Sierra Ward scored 16. Bethany Malcolm pulled down 13 rebounds for North Duplin, which travels to North Johnston on Tuesday.

The Rebels (3-9, 2-5 Carolina) committed 40 turnovers in the loss.

Shondalyn Rogers and Alex Garner each tallied 14 points for Spring Creek. Shantell Patterson contributed three points, 10 rebounds, two assists, one steal and one blocked shot before fouling out.

North Johnston nips Beddingfield

WILSON -- North Johnston jumped out to a 16-point lead, then fought to make it stand up as the Lady Panthers beat Wilson Beddingfield 54-53 Friday night.

Beddingfield's 17 early turnovers helped North Johnston (13-3) get its big early lead. But the Bruins wore away at the deficit all night and took a one-point lead going into the final minute.

But Janna Rogerson stole the ball and hit both foul shots to give the Panthers the win.

Rogerson had a team-high 19 points in the win, while Beddingfield's October Harris led all scorers with 23 points.

Trinity outlasts Faith Christian

GREENVILLE -- Trinity Christian outscored Faith Christian of Goldsboro 24-11 in the second half Friday en route to a 37-25 victory.

Faith Christian will travel to Rocky Mount on Tuesday to meet Falls Road.

Lady Rams stumble in ECC play

SNOW HILL -- Brianna Stanton led Greene Central with 11 points, but the Lady Rams had no answers for Tarboro in a 50-28 win over the Vikings Friday night in an Eastern Plains 2-A Conference matchup.

The Rams will be back on the court Tuesday when they try to knock off South Lenoir on its own court.

Princeton girls claim league win

PRINCETON -- Princeton's girls basketball team took advantage of a depleted Ayden-Grifton squad and got its first Carolina 1-A Conference win of the season in a 52-41 victory Friday night.

The Chargers (1-15, 1-6) dressed only nine players -- and five of them fouled out, leaving only four players on the floor for the final minutes of the contest. Princeton made good on 24 of 44 free throw attempts in the game.

Ayden-Grifton visits Rosewood on Tuesday.

Lady Hawks endure first conference loss

PINETOPS -- SouthWest Edgecombe took over sole possession of first place in the Eastern Plains 2-A Conference with an impressive 62-39 win against state-ranked North Lenoir Friday.

The Cougars (12-6, 4-0) were led Tamara Hyman and Dominique Hudson, who each turned in 15 points. Tracey Edwards added 10 for SouthWest, which extended its winning streak to seven games.

North Lenoir's Lonnie Jones ands Katie Maloney each had 13 points.

The Lady Hawks entered the game ranked No. 2 in the ihigh.com poll released earlier this week.
