PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock notched eight pins and romped past South Central 69-12 in a Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference wrestling match Tuesday evening.
The Golden Falcons claimed sole possession of second place in the ECC at 4-1 -- one-half match ahead of county rival Southern Wayne. The Saints entertain defending conference champion West Carteret in a key match tonight.
"I was pleased with our work on our feet tonight," Aycock coach Kevin Smith said. "We had the first takedown in every match tonight, and that is crucial in duals.
"We are doing a better job of setting our shots up and finishing."
David Rose (112 pounds), Greg Coudriet (119), Jackson Massey (125), Luan Tran (130), Ronald Lynn (135), Blake Brockmeyer (140), Randy Meisenhelder (145) and Turner Wood (189) each recorded a pin in the lopsided affair.
Will Medus earned a 7-2 decision against his opponent at 160.
Derek Lancaster (103), John Robertson (171) and heavyweight Dustin Gurley each received a forfeit.
South Central prevailed at 152 and 215.
"We still need to work on our mat wrestling," Smith said. "There are some things we need to improve on. We have to find ways to turn people when we are on top.
"And we have to do a better job at escaping from bottom."
The Golden Falcons (8-1) beat an ECC opponent for the 13th time in their last 15 tries. They hit the mat again Thursday at home against Rosewood. Both teams are ranked among the state's top 10 dual teams in their respective weight classes, according to the Elite 10 poll compiled by ncmat.com.
"Any time two teams from Wayne County get together, spectators can expect to see a great match," Smith said. "We are going to get in the room today and work on some things we saw from our last meeting with Rosewood, and hope to improve on the areas we saw a weakness in from tonight."
Match time is 7 p.m.
