CHARLOTTE -- Goldsboro native and Apex High School football coach Bob Wolfe was honored recently by the Carolina Panthers as the 2003 Coach of the Year. Wolfe was recognized for the honor during the Panthers' game December 21 against the Detroit Lions.
Wolfe, who is also the assistant athletic director at Apex, is in his 26th year of coaching and his 10th season as head football coach. He was an assistant at both Eastern Wayne and at Goldsboro early in his career and had head coaching stops at Kinston and Laney before joining the Apex staff in 1993. Wolfe also teaches algebra and geometry.
While at Apex, Wolfe has compiled a record of 56-51-1 and won conference titles in 2001 and 2002. Apex made the state playoffs in five of the last six seasons, reaching the second round twice.
In recognition of Wolfe's achievement, the Carolina Panthers donated $2,000 to Apex High School's athletic department. Wolfe was selected as one of ten weekly high school football coach of the week winners by the Panthers, and all the winners were honored at the game when Wolfe was announced as the winner.
"The values and life lessons he instills will stay with his players well after their playing days are done," said Riley Fields, Director of Community Relations for the Panthers.
Wolfe is the son of Pearl S. Wolfe and the late Dr. Harold Wolfe of Goldsboro.
