Q: Can you balance your loyalty/natural favor for the school system with the rest of the county commission's myriad of responsibilities?

A: The citizens of Wayne County have indicated to me that education should be the number one priority of our local government. My experience as an educator helps me to see the broad picture of the entire county and can help mold the future vision of our county in a positive way, preparing a future workforce ready for the 21st century work place.

Q: Do you support the sales tax referendum?

A: I prefer a sales tax over a property tax.

Q: What would you like to see included in a future bond referendum?

A: I would like for a bond referendum to be held with school construction having the highest priority.

Q: Would you be willing to raise property taxes? What about after reval?

A: I do not want to raise property taxes before or after the re-evaluation.

Q: Should the commissioners encourage the school board to look at redistricting/catchment area policies?

A. The role of the Board of Commissioners is to oversee local government including funding education at a reasonable level. Redistricting/catchment policies are the responsibility of the Wayne County Board of Education.

Q: Do the commissioners need to be more involved in classroom education if the school board is going to keep asking for money?

A: The role of the Wayne County Board of Education is to advocate for students and asking the Board of Commissioners for funding.

Q: Should the commission keep such a large fund balance?

A: I believe the fund balance should be sufficient to handle emergencies and to meet the requirements of programs and services required by local, state, and federal law.

Q: What role should the county play in providing water?

A: The board of commissioners should be knowledgeable of the policies and administrative regulations of all municipalities and water districts that provide water to Wayne County citizens. The county should provide leadership to make sure that safe, clean water is provided to everyone at a reasonable cost in a timely manner.

Q: Should the county be in the business of building shell buildings and providing economic incentives?

A: The county should support efforts, including shell buildings and economic incentives, to secure businesses to locate to Wayne County that can provide good paying jobs. I am concerned that the current businesses do not receive enough economic incentives.
