Q: How can the county commission strengthen families?

A: Jobs and education will go a long way. I said before, we educate our children well just to send them off to find jobs elsewhere. We have had no-growth county commissioners in the past 20 years. Don’t just settle for the military.

Q: Do you support the sales tax referendum?

A: No, not at this time. They hold a surplus.

Q: What would you like to see included in a future bond referendum?

A: Jails will at some point will be there. Again our former county commissioners built our jail on a city square. No room for expansion.

Q: Would you be willing to raise property taxes? What about after reval?

A: No. We need a freeze on all taxes help to offset high gas prices. Washington is not passing debt to your grandchildren, the local governments are. After reval we may have to lower taxes due to the lower value.

Q: Should the commissioners encourage the school board to look at redistricting/catchment area policies?

A: No. It is expensive.

Q: Do the commissioners need to be more involved in classroom education if the school board is going to keep asking for money?

A: County commissioners cannot educate children, they can only provide an environment for a student to learn. A kid will only get out of public education what he or she puts into it. The home environment is more important. Public education needs a good discipline plan.

Q: Should the commission keep such a large fund balance?

A: No. Our county figures should be more accessible by the public.

Q: What role should the county play in providing water?

A: This is a long term problem in which we have time to study. I would be in favor of a three- to four-year county plan to develop a permanent water supply.

Q: Should the county be in the business of building shell buildings and providing economic incentives?

A: Yes. We need jobs. We to invest in business so businesses will invest in us. I want rock solid contracts from anyone we help. I am also in favor of empowering some of our local people who want to start businesses here with small business loans that would be paid back to the county.
