Don DavisAge: 36 Residence: Snow Hill Occupation: Town of Snow Hill Mayor, instructor at Pitt and Lenoir community colleges, retired U.S. Air Force captain Q: How do you plan to balance Greene and Pitt counties’ needs with the needs Wayne County? A: I plan to bring community leaders together to set district goals and priorities. I will constantly seek feedback from Wayne County residents and be inclusive. Residents will see me in Wayne County beyond the election season. Q: How can the state help the counties/regions in terms of economic development, farmland preservation, water resources? A: The state can help with making more incentives available in our district for recruitment and expansion efforts, and continue funding our regional development services and small business centers. We also must support the statewide farmland preservation program the North Carolina Rural Center. Q: Will you continue Medicaid relief? A: I will continue to support the three-year phase out of county Medicaid expenses in exchange for the assumption of the sales tax. Q: Will you raise the gas tax? If not, how will you pay for transportation needs? Will you pledge to not push secondary road maintenance responsibilities onto the counties? A: I will not raise the gas tax. I believe that we must maintain the cap and set clear priorities for transportation needs, while looking for ways to increase operational efficiency. I will not push secondary road maintenance responsibilities onto our counties. Q: Will you lower state income taxes? A: My goal would be to stabilize state income taxes. Q: With the state experiencing surpluses in recent years, how will you deal with the likely deficits as the economy continues to go south? A: I believe that our tax code must be examined. We must look at ways to broaden the base and stabilize the rate, especially for individuals and small businesses. Q: How do you plan to deal with the rapidly overcrowding of the state's prisons and county jails? A: The best long-term solution to addressing the rapid overcrowding of our state’s prisons and county jails is early intervention. We must work to integrate anti-gang and drug programs into our communities. Q: What can be done to help counties deal with school facility financing? A: We must monitor lottery funds to ensuring that they serve our schools as designed. Q: What message do you want to take to Raleigh about eastern North Carolina? A: Eastern North Carolina is an important part of our state. However, there is a strong perception that we are often overlooked. We must capitalize on the opportunities that rest in the east to invest in education, build a highly skilled work force, create higher paying jobs, improve our infrastructure, and make our government work for every citizen in all regions of our all great state. |
