MR. ULIS NORMAN DAWSON

Mr. Ulis Norman Dawson, 89, 602 Longleaf Ave., Goldsboro, N.C., departed his earthly life Friday, Feb. 24, 2017, at his residence.

Ulis was born in Lenoir County, N.C., April 26, 1927.

He was born to the late Mr. Rommy Dawson and Mrs. Etta Green Dawson.

Ulis attended the Lenoir County Public School System.

In 1947, he was joined in matrimony to Ethel Mae Hines, also of LaGrange, N.C., and of this union, nine children were born.

Mr. Dawson served his country by enlisting into the United States Army. His tour of duty included Berlin, Germany, in 1945. He fought in World War II, and Mr. Dawson was honorably discharged from the United States Army in 1947.

He attended Shaw University, and he began his career at O'Berry Vocational Center in Goldsboro, N.C., where he retired as recreational therapist and administrator.

Mr. Dawson was a devoted teacher, leader and Christian at Saint Luke Free Will Baptist Church in LaGrange, N.C.

He served on the board of trustees at Fayetteville State University in Fayetteville, N.C.; was founder of the G. Wesley Allen M.D. Scholarship Foundation Inc.; and was a member of several Masonic Houses, Master-Masson 33rd degree and past grand master of Prince Hall Grand Lodge Free and Accepted Masons, North Carolina Jurisdiction.

He was an accomplished author, publishing two books published by Vantage Press, Inc. of New York, N.Y. -- the Autobiography of Ulis N. Dawson, "The Future is Now," and "The Quest for Truth."

Funeral service will be conducted Friday, March 3, 2017, at 11 a.m. in Saint Luke Free Will Baptist Church, 306 W. King St., LaGrange, N.C. Bishop Joe N. Dixon will officiate.

Interment will follow in Fairview Memorial Cemetery, 395 W. James St., LaGrange, N.C.

Also, a public viewing will be held Thursday, March 2, 2017, in Saint Luke Free Will Baptist Church, 306 W. King St., LaGrange, N.C., from 4 to 7 p.m.

Brother Dawson leaves a legacy of love and memories to his wife of the home, Mrs. Ethel Hines Dawson; his five daughters, Teresa Butler and husband, Ivey, of Henderson, N.C., Delphia Hucks of Goldsboro, N.C., Alease Dawson of Goldsboro, N.C., Jean Ethel Dawson of Charlotte, N.C., and Collisa Dawson of Cary, N.C.; his four sons, Norman Knabe of Germany, Norman Ellsworth Joyner and wife, Pat, of Atlanta, Ga., Larry Dawson of Goldsboro, N.C., and apostle Frank Dawson and wife, Lynette, of Goldsboro, NC; one sister, Helen Jones and husband, Richard, of Orlando. Fla.; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Friday, March 3, 2017, the family members and friends will assemble at the residence of Mrs. Ethel Dawson, 602 Long-leaf Ave., Goldsboro, N.C., at 9:30 a.m. in preparation for the funeral procession.

Flowers may be sent to Britt Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 414 E. Washington St., LaGrange, N.C., beginning Thursday, March 2, 2017, at 9:30 a.m.
