IRENE MALONEY

Aug. 9, 1931-Feb. 11, 2016

Frances Irene Maloney, Goldsboro, passed away Thursday, Feb. 11, 2016, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center surrounded by her family.

Irene was born Aug. 9, 1931, one of four children born to Clarence Woodson Mullins.

She graduated from Hazard High School in Hazard, Ky., in 1949, where she met her future husband, William Jesse Maloney. They were married July 14, 1950, after Jess returned from military service in the Philippine Islands and Korea.

Her marriage took her to Chicago, Ill., Memphis, Tenn., Minneapolis, Minn., and Lexington, Ky., where she raised her daughters, Debbie and Mary.

Throughout her active life, she pursued her avid interests in travel, golf, bridge, cooking and family.

She was active in numerous civic and community organizations. Irene served on the board at The Next Center in Lexington, Ky., a non-profit organization that provides a safe place for education, counseling and support to children, women and families in crisis.

Upon Jess' retirement from the energy industry, she moved to Goldsboro to be closer to her family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jess; sisters, Elizabeth Hibbard and Kathyrn Mallard; and her grandson, Ryan Silvestrini.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 1:45 p.m. Friday, Feb. 19, 2016, in the church parlor of St. Paul United Methodist Church, followed by a service celebrating Irene's life at 2 p.m. in the sanctuary, with the Rev. James Harry and the Rev. Phyllis Vail officiating. A private inurnment will follow the service in the church columbarium.

Irene is survived by a sister, Anne Wilson of Jasper, Ga.; daughters, Debbie Silvestrini of Beaufort and Mary Long and husband, Ron, of Goldsboro; grandchildren, Jennifer Cox and husband, Jesse, and Jessica Kimbrell and husband, Chris, both of Goldsboro and Matthew Silvestrini of Alamo, Calif.; great-grandchildren, Samuel Grey Cox and Lily Grace Kimbrell; niece, Rebecca Law of Georgia; and nephews, Kenneth Barber of Alabama and Larry Hibbard of Louisiana.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Kitty Askins Hospice Center for its compassionate care and superlative support of Irene during her journey in the last months of her life.
