Donald Franklin Pate Sr., 74, Beautancus community near Mount Olive, went to be with his Lord and savior, surrounded by his family, late Tuesday evening while being cared for at Rex Hospital in Raleigh.
He is survived by his wife, Janice Goodman Pate of the home; his daughter, Dondi Pate Hobbs, and her husband, Kevin, of Faison; his son, Donald F. Pate Jr. of Mount Olive; his two grandchildren whom he adored, Kaleab and Mackenzie Pate of Mount Olive; and two sisters, Nancy Pate of Garland and Julia Sites of Cumberland, Mass.
Donald is also survived by his extended family, a sister-in-law and her husband, Marilyn and Reggie Carter; four other sisters-in-law, Sue Goodman, Virginia Goodman, Betty Goodman and Lovine Goodman; and several nieces, nephews and other family whom he loved dearly.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents, Carlyle Franklin and Ruby Brogden Pate; a sister, Maxine P. Britt; and a brother, Larry Pate.
Donald served his church at Rooty Branch in several capacities over the years, from deacon to building fund treasurer and the Men’s Fellowship.
He had also worked as a machinist at National Spinning, Sonoco, followed by a family-operated poultry farm and produce farmer, which was his love. He also enjoyed time spent in years past beekeeping with his late brother-in-law, Jimmy Goodman.
A service to remember and celebrate his life will be held Friday, Jan. 15, at 6 p.m. at Rooty Branch Original Free Will Baptist Church, located at Summerlin’s Crossroads, Mount Olive. The Rev. Michael “Mickey” Whitfield will officiate the services, with a time of visiting friends and family following at the church. Committal services will be held in a private setting Saturday morning in Carlyle Pate Family Cemetery, located directly across from his residence.
