Robert Lloyd "R.L." Gurley, 80, passed away Saturday, Oct. 6, 2012, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center surrounded by his family.

R.L. was born in Wayne County Jan. 30, 1932, to the late Kirby Cicero Gurley and Eva Mae Howell Gurley.

He was a graduate of Goldsboro High School, and had retired from Southern Bell Telephone Co. after 31 years of service.

For more than 21 years, R.L. owned and operated Gurley's Gym in downtown Goldsboro, where he had the opportunity to encourage and inspire young men to be all they could be. R.L. was a man of personal and professional integrity whose passionate work with young people made a difference in many lives.

A remembrance gathering will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, of which he was a member and an ordained high priest, Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2012, at 4 p.m., with bishop J.W. Bass presiding. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.

R.L. is survived by his wife of 60 years, Phyllis Banks Gurley; his daughters, Patricia McFatter and husband, Terry, of Brandon, Fla., and Cathy Gurley of Goldsboro; his grandchildren, Travis Davis, Brandon Davis, Celeste Davis, Shelley McFatter and Kimberly McFatter; his brother, Kirby Cleveland "K.C." Gurley and wife, Margaret; his sister-in-law, Amelia "Mimi" Millard; many loved nieces and nephews; and former Gurley's Gym members.

In addition to his parents, R.L. was preceded in death by his son, Robert Lloyd Gurley Jr. "Bobby," and a niece, Wendy LuAnn Gurley.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2012, from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and other times at his home.
