Dec. 7, 1919-Jan. 17, 2011

RALEIGH -- Lucille Wiley Hancock Barclay, 91, passed away peacefully Jan. 17, 2011, at Mayview Convalescent Center in Raleigh.

Lucy was born in Franklin, Tenn., Dec. 7, 1919, the daughter of Maude and Fred Wiley.

Throughout her life, she was a joyous and generous person, and a loving wife and mother.

As a devout Christian, she found her greatest happiness in helping others.

Lucy graduated from Central High School in Charlotte.

She loved life, her family and her countless friends. In her youth, she was an accomplished dancer and dance teacher. She loved music and reading, but people in all their variety interested her more than anything else.

She was a member and leader of Hawthorne Lane Methodist Church in Charlotte, and president of the Charlotte Junior Woman's Club.

She enjoyed working in several administrative and sales positions in Charlotte and Chapel Hill, but most of her energy and all of her love were focused on her family and her friends. Her character, her energy, her humor and her compassion made the world a better place.

Lucy was predeceased by her mother and father; her brother, Everett; her first husband, William G. "Gerry" Hancock Sr. of Charlotte; and her second husband, George T. Barclay of Chapel Hill.

She is survived by two sons, William G. "Gerry" Hancock Jr., and daughter-in-law, Hope Hancock, of Raleigh and Steven Thomas Hancock of Charlotte; her sister, Virginia Clarkson of Florence, S.C.; grandchildren, Drew G. Hancock, and wife, Staci, and Abigail P. Carter and husband, Christopher; great-grandchildren, Kaylee Hancock and Madison Carter all of Loganville, Ga.; nieces, Gail Jeffords and husband, Van, of Florence, S.C., and Ann Clarkson of Benicia, Calif.; nephew, Bob Clarkson and wife, Bette, of Rock Hill, S.C.; and her cousin, Lyn Sutterlin and husband, Frank W. Sutterlin, of Charlotte.

Lucy's last years were greatly enriched by the outstanding staff and administration of Mayview Convalescent Center in Raleigh and The Pines of Goldsboro. The family is deeply grateful for these wonderful people, who work tirelessly to enrich the lives of all the residents in their care.

The family will receive visitors at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 300 St. Mary's St., in Raleigh, N.C., from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 20. A private graveside service involving the family will be held in Charlotte Saturday, Jan. 22.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Hawthorne Lane Methodist Church in Charlotte at 501 Hawthorne Lane, Charlotte, N.C., 28204, or Mayview Convalescent Center at 513 E. Whitaker Mill Road, Raleigh, NC., 27608.
