Peggy Gillespie Ford, 67, of Kenmar Drive in Martinsville, died Friday at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville.
A memorial service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church. A private interment will be held at a later date.
She was born in North Bend, Ohio on May 26, 1941 to Alma B. Gillespie Sunderland of Martinsville and the late John E. Gillespie. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Mercer Ford in 1993. She was a graduate of Vandalia Butler High School in Vandalia, Ohio and Bowling Green University. She was chairman of the English Department at Carlisle School where she had taught for 20 years.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Martinsville and also the National Geographic Educational Alliance, Alpha Xi Delta and the Carlisle School family. Along with her husband, Peggy founded the YMCA in their living room in Jamestown, N.D., where she became program director and later was program director for the YMCA in Goldsboro. She was also former president of North Dakota Citizens for the Arts.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by two daughters, Catherine Wingfield and Carin Gregory, both of Martinsville; one son, Collin Ford of Sterling, Va.; one sister, Shary Wampner of Martinsville; two stepsisters, Dr. Ruth George of San German, Puerto Rico, and Judy Levins of Sidney, Australia; one stepbrother, Robert George of Tucson, Ariz.; and five stepgrandchildren.
The family will receive friends today from 4 to 6 p.m. at the home of John and Carin Gregory, 1019 Mulberry Road in Martinsville.
