Penelope Jane Nelson, 62, of Goldsboro, passed away on Friday, Feb. 6, 2009.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 14, 2009, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church with the Rev. Bill Ordelt officiating. Inurnment will follow in the church columbarium.
She was born on March 2, 1946, in Reedsburg, Wis., the daughter of the late Durlin and Dorothy Pawlisch. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin at Platteville in 1968 and received her master's degree at East Carolina University in adult education. She taught public speaking and drama at Chambersburg High School in Pennsylvania for 10 years and later taught at Wayne Community College. Penny loved to travel with her husband, Dean, even collecting butterflies, eating piranha, and watching birds in the Amazon. She also loved the water; she and Dean spent many weekends with friends and family at the beach collecting shells, traveling on jet skis and more recently enjoying her Jones Brothers skiff. Good Shepherd Lutheran Church was also a very important part of Penny's life, and she organized countless events with her friends there, including an annual Murder Mystery trip to Allenberry Playhouse in Pa., the Good Shepherd Dinner Club and the Sequence Group. Penny's wit, charm and exciting personality will be dearly missed by everyone whose lives she touched.
She is survived by her husband Dean; and cats, Thorvald and Sven, of Goldsboro; her brother, Peter, and wife, Juanita Pawlisch, of Punta Gorda, Fla.; and her sister, Susanne, and husband, Ronald Kampstra, of Tomahawk, Wis.
She was preceded in death by her sister Elizabeth Braith of Madison, Wis.
Memorials can be given to the Penny Nelson Scholarship at the Wayne Community College Foundation, 3000 Wayne Memorial Drive, Goldsboro, N.C. 27534 or to Good Shepherd Evangelical Lutheran Church, 532 Country Day Road, Golds-boro, N.C. 919-735-0128.
The family will receive friends before the service from 10 until 11 a.m. at the church.
