CARL D. WHISENANT

Carl David Whisenant, 79, passed away Thursday after a brave battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be held today at 4 p.m. at the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home. A graveside service will be Monday at noon at the Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Jacksonville with full military honors.

Carl was born Sept. 24, 1929, in Anniston, Ala. He was a Realtor in the Goldsboro area for 44 years. He was a husband, father, patriot, hero, community leader and valued friend. Carl served his country in WWIl as a gunner's mate on the Battleship Massachusetts. He went on to serve in the Korean War, the Vietnam War and the military operations in the Dominican Republic. During his military career, he served in the U.S. Navy and retired from the U.S. Air Force.

He started Whis Realty in 1965, which he co-owned with his wife, Joyce. He was a past president of the Goldsboro Civitans, and past commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He received numerous awards and recognition, but it was his family that he valued beyond measure. Carl was a member of Adamsville Baptist Church.

Carl is survived by wife, Joyce Whisenant; daughters, Teresa Miller and husband, Richard Miller, of Alexandria, Va., Mary Ann Ham and husband, Ronnie Ham, of Florence, S.C., Patricia Powell and husband, Robert Powell, of Nashville; sons, Tim Whisenant of Dallas, Texas, and Stephen Whisenant of Goldsboro; grandchildren, David Whisenant Jr. and Wilson Miller of Alexandria, Va., Amanda, Sarah, and Julie-Ann Ham of Florence, S.C., Tyler Whisenant of Wilmington, Christopher Powell of Nashville, and Stephen, Leslie-Ann and Natalie Whisenant of Dallas, Texas.

Carl was preceded in death by his sons, Michael Patrick Whisenant and David Joseph Whisenant.

The family will receive friends following the funeral service at the funeral home.
