PIKEVILLE -- Rachel McCullen Kennedy, 87, died Wednesday night at Loris Community Hospital in Loris, S.C.
The family will receive friends at Tyndall Funeral Home in Mount Olive on Saturday from 10 to 10:45 a.m. at which time they will proceed to Maplewood Cemetery in Mount Olive for an 11 a.m. graveside service to be officiated by the Rev. J. Paul Rose.
A native of Mount Olive and a graduate of Dudley High School, she had been a long-time resident of the Pikeville and Goldsboro areas before relocating to Little River, S.C. over five years ago to be near her son.
While a Pikeville resident, she attended St. Joseph United Methodist Church, and in Little River, she attended Calabash Presyberian Church.
She retired in 1995 from Wayne Memorial Hospital where she was a manager in the administration office with many years of faithful service.
Daughter of the late Walter and Cora Price McCullen, due to the untimely death of her mother when she was five years old, she was reared by the Bert Martin family. She was the widow of Ezra James Kennedy Sr.
Mrs. Kennedy is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Anne Kennedy of Little River, S.C.; a grandson, James Scott Kennedy and wife, Carol L. Kennedy, and a great-grandson, Dustin Scott Kennedy, all of Columbia, S.C.; a brother and sister-in-law, Gordon and Carmie P. McCullen of Mount Olive; the descendants of the Martin family; and several nieces and nephews.
Following the service, the family will gather at the home of Ray and Janice Faircloth, 117 Meadowlark Road, Goldsboro, for fellowship.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to a local hospice.
Arrangements are being handled by Tyndall Funeral Home.
