LESSIE L. BASS

Dr. Lessie Louise Bass died Sunday at Wayne Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Goldsboro Disciple Institute with the Rev. Antonio Blow officiating. Family members will greet friends immediately following the service at the church.
Born Feb. 26, 1946, in Wayne County to the late William Bass and Laurena Hicks Bass Sauls, she was preceded in death by her brother, William Bass and sisters, Helen Bass Jones and Belinda Bass Joyner.
She leaves to cherish her memory one daughter, Deborah Bass Artis and husband, Charles Artis, of Fremont; one grandson, Charles "C.W." Artis of Fremont; brothers, Howard Bass, Junius (Vivian) Sauls and James Earl (Cynthia) Bass, all of Goldsboro and Ricky Bass of Angier; sisters, Leatrice Bass Woodard of Fremont, Dalphine Sauls (Freddie) Bynum of Stantonsburg; a special friend, Deborah "Debbie" Moody; special great niece, Amyrah Bynum. She also leaves to cherish her memory 15 nieces, 14 nephews, a host of great nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and other relatives and friends, along with her East Carolina University family.
She holds a special place in the West Greenville Community.
Dr. Bass was a professor at East Carolina University where she had been employed since 1993, with the College of Human Ecology School of Social Work. She had touched the lives of many social work students and left a lasting impression on many. She also spent time at the University of Maryland, Fayetteville State University and Barton College where she also taught.
She was the recipient of the 2008 Board of Governors Award for Excellence in Public Service and was the Executive Director of the Lucille W. Gorham Intergenerational Community Center of West Greenville.
She was one the five founding members of the Wilson, Omicron lota Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. and a life member of Norwayne Alumni.
