GERTRUDE W. WOODARD

Gertrude W. Woodard, 90, of Princeton, went to be with her Lord on Friday Dec. 26, 2008, at Johnston Medical Center with her family by her side.
The funeral service will be conducted Monday evening at 7 at Casey Funeral Home with the Revs. Percy Coleman and J. Lewis Baker officiating. Committal services will be held Tuesday morning at 11 at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.
She was born in Dillon County, S.C. on Oct. 4, 1918 to the late William Luther and Carrie McDowell Woodard. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, one sister and one grandson.
Mrs. Woodard was married to the late Robert D. Woodard for 46 years, and was a longtime member of Progressive Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday School and was a recipient of a "Faithful Servant" award in 1997. As long as she was able Mrs. Woodard carried on a card and phone ministry to the sick and shut-ins. She was also a volunteer for the Council on Aging and at the coffee shop at Wayne Memorial Hospital. All through her life she was a very giving and loveable person. During her early years Mrs. Woodard was a faithful companion to her husband on the farm and an excellent seamstress for the public. Later on, she worked for Belk's for 24 years until she quit work to care for her sick husband.
She is survived by a daughter, Margaret Merrill and husband, J. M., of Goldsboro; sons, Charles Woodard of Goldsboro and Robert E. Woodard and wife, Gladys, of Nashville, Tenn.; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Monday evening beginning at 6 and immediately following the funeral.
