FLORENCE, S.C. -- Mr. Samuel Bartell, 73, Dillon, S.C., died Friday at Carolina Hospital Systems.

Funeral services for Mr. Samuel Bartell of Dillon, S.C. will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Mount Clair Missionary Baptist Church in Lake City, S.C. The family will greet friends tonight from 6 to 8 p.m. at Mount Seal United Methodist Church in Hemingway, S.C.

At an early age, Sam joined Mount Seal United Methodist Church and was a faithful member his entire life. He served in many capacities, including chairperson of the Staff Parish Relations Committee and chairperson of the Cemetery Committee. He was also a member of the Church Administrative Council. He loved his church and was known for making the greatest lemonade each year at the church picnic. Sam was educated in the public schools of Williamsburg County and graduated from Tomlinson High School in 1954. He matriculated at the Atlanta College of Mortuary Science and graduated in 1955. He dedicated more than 50 years to a life of distinctively finer service in the funeral service business. His commitment and the pride he took in his work served as an inspiration to many embalmers and funeral directors over the years. He rendered services from the Pee Dee to the Coast.

He was the founder and partner of Bartell Funeral Home of Hemingway for more than 30 years and he was the founder and owner of Bartell Funeral Home, LLC of Dillon, which has been in existence for more than 20 years and has two locations in the Dillon area. He was a member of the Nation and State Funeral Directors and Morticians Association, Inc., as well as the Sixth Congressional District of South Carolina Morticians Association. He adopted the motto, "Sympathy Expresses Itself through Sincere Service."

Among his survivors are, a loving wife, Dr. Flossie Bartell; three daughters, Melissa Capers and husband pastor Leslie Capers of Goldsboro, Dr. Christi Bartell of Charlotte and the Rev. Gypsie and husband Winfred Murdaugh of Rowland; a son, Mr. Anthony Moore of Greenfield, Mass.; one and only one granddaughter, Courtney Capers of Goldsboro; three grandsons, Winfred "Chip" Murdaugh III, Christian Terry Heard and Myles Bartell Heard; seven siblings; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
