Eloise Thomasena Middleton Larkin, wife of the late Francis L. Larkin, slept away peacefully on Saturday at her home on 303 S. Virginia St., Goldsboro, N.C., at approximately 3 a.m.

Eloise was the first child of eight children born to John Devine and Lillie Marita Middleton of Kenansville, N.C. She attended and graduated from E.M. Smith High School in Fayetteville, N.C. She attended Fayetteville Normal College and graduated with a teaching certificate in Elementary Education. Having a desire to further her education, she enrolled in Winston-Salem State University, during the summers, until she met the requirements and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. Being focused to continue her education, she studied further at Columbia University in New York, where she received a Masters of Art degree in Elementary Education. Eloise continued her studies at Columbia University for many summers and received a graduate teaching certificate in Music Education.

Eloise taught for many years in both Duplin and Wayne Counties. She taught elementary education at Goldsboro's East End School and retired from the Goldsboro City Schools system.

Eloise was a faithful member of First African Baptist Church, where she attended Sunday School, sung in the choir and at times served as an accompanist for the junior choir. She was affiliated with many community organizations including the Goldsboro Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., the Goldsboro Chapter of the Continental Societies, Inc., Dillard Alumni, a bridge club and many others. She was inducted into the National Hall of Fame of the Continental Societies, Inc., as well as, the Goldsboro Hall of Fame for the Goldsboro Chapter of the Continental Societies, Inc.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis L. Larkin; her parents, John and Lillie Middleton; three brothers, Abraham Vincent "A.V.", Johnnye and Theodore; two sisters, Reba and Taritha; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Eloise is survived by her brother, Harvey L. Middleton of New Haven, Conn.; her sister, Roberta LaVerne Middleton Furlow of Hampton, Va.; nieces, Gerardette Marita Furlow of Raleigh, N.C., Cherie Denise Furlow of Alexandria, Va., Lisa Valerie Middleton Brown and husband, Marlon, of Atlanta, Ga., and Taritha Lavon Middleton of Milford, Conn.; nephews, David L. Middleton of New Haven, Conn., Dwayne M. Middleton and wife, Rory, of Fairfield, Conn., and Jerome H. Furlow and wife, Chechena, of Lorton, Va.; grand-nieces, Waverly, Sydney and Dylann Middleton, all of Fairfield, Conn., and Londonn Furlow of Lorton, Va.; grand-nephews, Matthew, Nicholas and Joel Brown, all of Atlanta, Ga., and Bryce Furlow of Lorton, Va.; a devoted cousin, Hazel Lillie Middleton Farrior of Kenansville, N.C.; a goddaughter, Yvonne Stoval of Goldsboro, N.C.; a good and faithful care provider, Mildred Willis of Fremont, N.C.; and many other in-laws, neighbors and friends.

Funeral service will be conducted on Friday, Dec. 7, 2007, 11 a.m. at First African Baptist Church, 803 Harris St., Goldsboro, N.C. 27530 with the Rev. Dr. Louis Leigh Jr., bringing the eulogy. Burial will follow at Wayne Memorial Park-North. On Thursday, Dec. 6, 2007 at 7 p.m., at Hamilton Funeral Chapel, 423 S. James St., Goldsboro, N.C. 27530, members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and the Continental Societies will conduct their burial rites, the family will be present and friends are welcome to attend.
