SENIOR MASTER SGT. BOBBY O. SHIFFLETT SR.

Bobby O. Shifflett Sr., Senior Master Sgt., Retired U.S. Air Force, died on Sunday at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

Bobby was born in Charlottesville, Va., to the late Ernest O. Shifflett and Effie Mae Dean Shifflett. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force for 22 years, 1956-1978, which included service during the Vietnam War. While serving in the Air Force, Bobby was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Meritorious Service Award plus 1 Oak Leaf Cluster and the Air Force Commendation plus 1 Oak Leaf Cluster. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and was also a Mason. Bobby retired in 2005 from Waynesborough Opthalmology after more than 20 years of employment and he had also worked with Dr. James Bizzell for several years.

Graveside services will be held Monday, Oct. 22, 2007 at 1 p.m. at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va., with full military honors.

Bobby is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Betty P. Shifflett; his daughters, Dianne Graham and husband, Ernie, of Goldsboro and Amy Sterkenburg and husband, Joe, of Landenberg, Pa.; his son, Bobby O. Shifflett Jr. of Goldsboro; his sister, Peggy Weikle and husband, Forest, of Faber, Va.; his brothers, Michael Shifflett and wife, Kitty, of Reva, Va. and Ernest O. Shifflett Jr. and wife, Teresa, of Williamsburg, Va.; and his sister-in-law, Migeon Knowles of Goldsboro. He is also survived by his beloved grandchildren, Stephanie Manzulli and husband, Vinny, C.G. Kirby Jr., Josh Kirby, Dustin Sterkenburg and Chad Sterkenburg; his great-grandchildren, Trey Manzulli and Ashlyn Manzulli; his nieces, Kelly Knowles; Pamela Graves; Gloria Crisp and husband, Chuck, Kelly Hill and husband, Spencer, Denise Johnson and husband, Donnie; and his nephews, William Shepherd Jr. and Michael D. Shifflett.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepbrother, John W. "Butch" Brown and his brother-in-law, H.M. Knowles Jr.

Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to Kitty Askins Hospice Center, 2402 Wayne Memorial Drive, Goldsboro, N.C. 27534 or to the Disabled American Veterans, 112 Patrick St., Goldsboro, N.C. 27530.

The family will receive friends Thursday, Sept. 27, 2007 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home and other times at his home, 1802 E. Pine St., Goldsboro.
