Operation Unite Goldsboro and other community organizers are offering free end-of-grade tutoring sessions as well as a nonprofit training course.
Tutoring opportunities, for students in third through eighth grade, are currently available for the next several weeks every Monday and Wednesday evening, from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Refuge Temple, 509 N. Carolina St.
A daylong EOG Review Camp will also be held Saturday, May 20, from 12:30 p.m. 4:30 p.m. at Rebuilding Broken Places, 2015 N. William St.
"Our goal is to help out wherever we see that there is a need," said Mark Colebrook, organizer of Operation Unite Goldsboro. "With the school year ending in a couple of weeks, we realized that a lot of our students needed a little extra help in preparing for the end-of-grade tests."
Anyone with a student interested in tutoring can contact Colebrook at [email protected] or (910) 494-2292. The group is seeking additional tutors.
"Our goal is to have enough tutors where we could tutor kids at 509 N. Carolina Street, Rebuilding Broken Places, and possibly at the W.A. Foster Center because these places already have a captive audience of kids," Colebrook said.
There will also be a free nonprofit organization class on May 25, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Refuge Temple Church. The event is being hosted by Jermaine Dawson, organizer of more recent town hall style meetings in Goldsboro. The class will be taught by Imari Jackee Oliver, a small business prosperity coach.
"Knowledge is power and it starts with being educated," Colebrook said. "Having a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization opens up many doors for not only that organization but the community as well. It makes it a lot easier to get grants for your organization when you are certified."
