The Goldsboro Planning Commission approved site plans for the addition of a middle school at Wayne Preparatory Academy during its meeting Monday.
The decision sends the plan to the Goldsboro City Council, which will review the charter school addition during its Sept. 6 meeting.
Wayne Preparatory Academy is gearing up for the second phase of development that includes a 29,396-square-foot, two-story building on its property near the corner of Patetown and Tommy's roads. The middle school would be located next to the elementary school, which is currently housed in several modular units along Tommy's Road.
Site plans include the completion of internal connecting driveways that will allow access to the schools from either Patetown Road or Tommy's Road, said Jennifer Collins, Goldsboro assistant planning director. The N.C. Department of Transportation also requires the widening of Patetown Road to accommodate turning lanes near the school entrance.
Also part of the plan is the addition of a gravel walking trail around the perimeter of the property. The walking trail is planned to extend along Tommy's Road, Patetown Road and the length of the internal driveway.
The addition of the middle school is part of a four-phased project for the charter school, which opened in 2014. The new school is planned for occupancy in July 2017.
Also during the meeting, the commission approved:
* Site plans for Brewmasters restaurant at 2402 E. Ash St.
* A conditional-use permit for a tattoo parlor at 1923 N. William St. near The Playground Nightclub.
* A conditional-use permit for a tattoo parlor at 605 E. Ash St., with the condition that the business limit its Sunday hours from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m. due to concerns voiced by members of First Free Will Baptist Church.
* A preliminary subdivision plan for a 15.89-acre site on C.R. Lewis Dairy Road, west of N.C. 111; and a preliminary subdivision plan to divide a near seven-acre site into two lots, allowing the developer to sell about an acre where offices are located at 1299 Parkway Drive.
The planning commission decisions will be considered by the city council on Sept. 6.
