The man police say shot and wounded another man outside at Pinewood Square on North Spence Avenue Saturday has been charged.
Linwood Grantham, 24, turned himself in to Wayne County Sheriff Larry Pierce and a Goldsboro police detective Monday.
Grantham is now free on a $81,000 secured bond after being charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and several open warrants for failure to appear on other charges.
According to a police report, Grantham had been involved in an ongoing dispute with the victim, Alexander Rickey Shaw, 22. The two men argued Saturday outside the Dollar Tree store resulting in Grantham allegedly pulling out a gun and shooting Shaw once in the chest.
Shaw was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital by ambulance and was later transferred to Vidant Medical Center, where he underwent surgery.
Maj. Anthony Carmon of the Goldsboro Police Department said Shaw remains at Vidant.
"He is listed in serious condition," Carmon said today.
Grantham was placed under arrest without incident at the ABC Store on U.S. 70 East at 6:33 p.m. Monday.
The details of his decision turning himself in, however, remain unclear.
"Well, his mother apparently knows a person who worked on my campaign," Pierce said.
When Grantham decided to turn himself in, his mother had her friend contact Pierce's friends and the two sides worked to coordinate her son's arrest, Pierce explained. But he could not explain why Grantham felt more comfortable turning himself over to the sheriff's office rather than the police department.
Grantham is scheduled for a first appearance in District Court today.
