Three people died early Tuesday morning when their vehicle ran off the road, overturned and crashed into several trees and caught fire, investigators with the North Carolina Highway Patrol said.
The wreck took place at 4:15 a.m. along North Beston Road. The driver, Luis Morales, 23, and passengers Rene Sanchez, 21, and Serafin Garcia, 24, were all killed in the crash.
"They were traveling south on North Beston Road at a high rate of speed. The driver lost control, went of the road to the left and struck a ditch bank," First Sgt. Jerry Burton of the patrol said.
Their car overturned and struck several trees before coming to rest against a final tree, Burton said.
"The horrific part is that the car then burst into flames," he said.
The consumption of alcohol and speed were contributing factors, he added.
