Wayne County sent 21 athletes, partners and coaches to participate in the 2015 Special Olympics North Carolina Fall Games in High Point.
The delegation was headed by Donna May. Athletes and partners participated in both bocce and golf. Weather conditions forced cancellation of the bocce competition. The golf competition continued with modified lift, clean and place rules.
The bocce athletes were Jonathan Delano, Shannon Moore, Tyler Edmundson, Heather Pardue, Jordan Wiggins and Bobby Willis. Participating partners were Emani McDuffie, Camryn King, Angela Wegscheider and Matt Wiggins. The team was coached by Brian Hilliard. Due to the cancellation, all bocce participants received participation ribbons.
The golf team consisted of four athletes and three partners. In Level Two, the 9-hole alternate shot competition, Paul Edwards and Don Jenkins Jr. took won gold and Alan Jenkins and Nathan Trent won silver medals. In Level Three, 18-hole alternate shot competition, Stephen and Robert Hannum won bronze medals. In level four, nine-hole individual stroke competition, Erica Walderman won the gold medal. The team was coached by Debi and Rich Walderman and Don Jenkins.
All gold medal winners are now eligible for selection to Team North Carolina competing in the 2016 National Golf Invitational next September.
