A 21-year-old woman from Fremont is to blame for a series of motor vehicle break-ins, according to a press release issued Thursday by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.
Investigators allege that Christina M. Connelly, of 202 E. South St., broke into almost a dozen vehicles -- many of which were left unlocked -- in the area of Airport Road and N.C. 222 on the night of Nov. 6.
Ms. Connelly is charged with nine counts of felony breaking and entering a motor vehicle, four counts of larceny and four counts of possession of stolen goods. She also faces a single count of felony financial transaction card theft. She has been placed in the Wayne County Detention Center under a $50,000 secured bond.
According to the press release, Ms. Connelly broke into cars left in people's yards and removed items including bank cards. One of the cardholders was notified by their financial institution of attempts to use the card in both Wayne and Greene counties.
Investigators were able to track those transactions and other leads throughout the course of their investigation and, as a result, to identify Ms. Connelly as a suspect.
Some of the property has been recovered and is being sorted out to be returned to the rightful owners.
Ms. Connelly is due in Wayne County District Court later today for a first appearance. Additional charges might be forthcoming.
