Donna Lewis, a Title I instructional specialist at Northwest Elementary School, has been named Wayne County Public Schools' 2015-16 Outstanding Elementary Mathematics Teacher of the Year.
She started her education career eight years ago at Northwest. She holds a bachelor's degree in elementary education and special education, and a master's degree in administration and curriculum and instruction.
She was recognized at the recent school board meeting, where board member Jennifer Strickland acknowledged the accomplishment.
"Mrs. Lewis is a leader in mathematics and utilizes 'flipped' classroom techniques and STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) to engage and excite students about mathematics," she said. "She has led professional development trainings both at the school and district level, and has participated in district surveys, seminars and pacing guide planning meetings to share ideas on improving the math curriculum."
As Wayne County's representative, Mrs. Lewis will be recognized at the upcoming annual North Carolina Council of Teachers in Mathematics, or NCCTM, conference in Greensboro. She will also receive a one-year membership in the NCCTM and a personalized award.
Her name will appear in the fall issue of the NCCTM journal, the Centroid and on the organization's website, Mrs. Strickland said.
