MOUNT OLIVE -- The Mount Olive Police Department has identified the man found dead in a car outside the Roses Discount Store on North Breazeale Avenue, Monday morning.
Greg Oteloio, 56, of Dudley, died of an apparent gunshot wound sometime in the early morning hours Monday. His wife located his body in the vehicle parked in the Mount Olive shopping center at 8 a.m.
"She called 911, our officer showed up and found the victim was unresponsive. EMS was called out and they pronounced him DOA," Mount Olive Police Chief Tommy Brown said.
The incident was initially thought to be a clear case of suicide. A handgun was found inside the vehicle with the victim.
Brown said that some of the things the family has told investigators have made him wary of classifying the case one way or another just yet.
"The family is somewhat of the mindset that he would not do anything like this," Brown said.
To help determine exactly what did happen, Brown ordered that gunshot residue testing be conducted on the victims hands, and that the weapon and other evidence collected from inside the vehicle be tested.
"We're going to send all that off, have it tested and get it all matched up," he said.
The case will remain classified as a death investigation and will continue to be worked as such until the evidence reveals something more conclusive, he said.
"I want to be fair to the family and make sure we do everything we can," Brown said.
