MOUNT OLIVE -- The Mount Olive Police Department was still on scene late this morning, investigating a fatal shooting in the parking lot of Roses Discount Store at 1003 N. Breazeale Ave.
The victim's name had not yet been released.
The call came in at about 8 a.m. A man was discovered dead in the driver's seat of a Kia Soul SUV, the lone vehicle in a row of parking spaces facing North Breazeale Avenue. Part of the driver side window had been shot out.
There was no word on how long the victim had been there. Officers at the scene said the gunshot was likely self-inflicted. Mount Olive police Chief Tommy Brown stopped short of confirming any details.
"I can't confirm anything just yet. There are still some things we need to do on our end," Brown said.
"And that is based on some of the things the family has told us," he added.
Brown left the scene after being updated. Crime scene investigators stayed behind, battling rain and doing their best to shield the view of onlookers driving through the Roses parking lot -- which is shared by Food Lion -- as they prepared to begin collecting evidence.
Family members of the victim arrived on scene and waited in cars or under umbrellas for any information.
At the time of this report, no further details had been released.
