The second annual "Stars Dancing for a Cure," a fundraiser to benefit patients going through cancer, will be held next weekend.
The event, which started out pairing local residents affected by cancer directly or dancing in honor or memory of a loved one affected by the diagnosis, has been changed up a bit this year, said organizer Carl "Bubba" Williams Jr.
Instead of a localized version of the TV show, "Dancing with the Stars," this year's event will be a dinner theatre format.
Showtime is 6 p.m. on Saturday at Walnut Creek Country Club. After the format dinner and play, there will be two hours of dancing for the audience to participate in, featuring ballroom, shag and line dances, Williams said.
Proceeds will benefit Southeastern Medical Oncology Center, a non-profit foundation that serves residents in eastern North Carolina.
The theme of the dance-rich program, "The Leaf That Would Not Change," is a poignant depiction about self-esteem and survival, Williams said. Based on a children's book of the same name, the story centers around a little leaf that would not change its colors despite the pressure of friends and neighbors.
The cast is comprised of local residents and dance instructors as well as students at Top Hat Ballroom Dance Studio and other area dance studios.
Tickets are $75 each, which includes dinner, the show and dancing afterwards. They can be purchased by contacting Teresa Hoyt at SMOC, 919-580-0000.
