Wayne Community College has added sessions of the "ServSafe" Food Handler course to accommodate the large number of workers who still need training to comply with new regulations for restaurants and other food vendors.

The WCC Continuing Education course prepares restaurants' employees for the National Restaurant Association's Food Protection Manager Certification examination. Food protection managers will be required to be on duty in restaurants and other facilities that receive a sanitation rating when the new "food code rules" in North Carolina's Food Protection Standards take effect Jan. 1, 2014.

The course covers basic food safety, personal hygiene, cross contamination and allergies, time and temperature, and cleaning and sanitation in classroom sessions. They end with the final certification exam.

Joyce Hamilton-Fleming, director of WCC Continuing Education Allied Health Programs, encouraged local restaurants to send their employees though the day-and-a-half training this summer in order to guarantee that they are in compliance on time. She anticipates that the last classes before the law takes effect will fill up quickly.

Cost is $103, which includes the exam fee. The textbook, ServeSafe Manager Book sixth edition, can be purchased separately from from the college's bookstore or online at www.servsafe.com.
