The father of a 15-month-old found dead on the side of a Columbus County road -- on the shoulder of U.S. 905 between Whiteville and Tabor City -- has been charged by the Air Force in connection with the child's death. Seymour Johnson Air Force Base Senior Airman Matthew Theurer is currently being held in the Sampson County Pre-Confinement Facility for voluntary manslaughter, negligent homicide and murder, according to Linda Card, Chief of Public Affairs for the Air Force Office of Special Investigations. Sources close to the investigation said the Columbus County coroner has sent the child's body to the Chief Medical Examiner's Office in Chapel Hill, where the autopsy will be performed.
