A Goldsboro firefighter looks over the damage to a home at 401 N. George St. Wednesday night. Officials said the fire started on the back porch and damaged the kitchen and downstairs areas before rekindling in an upstairs room. Damages were estimated at $30,000.

The Goldsboro Fire Department arrived at 401 N. George St. Wednesday just after 7:40 p.m. to find a working fire inside the residence.

"The blaze began on the back porch and caused damage in the kitchen and downstairs areas before breaking out again in an upstairs room," said Assistant Fire Chief Frank Sasser. He said that four engine companies and a ladder company responded.

Investigators estimate the damage to the structure and contents of the home at $30,000, largely due to the fact that the home was filled with antique furniture and accessories. The cause of the fire is still being investigated, but so far there has been no evidence to arouse suspicion.

Sasser said that the recent rash of structure fires in and around downtown isn't necessarily unusual.

"To have six calls almost at once like the other night, that part was unusual, but to have a structure fire and then come back the next night and have another one, that's not uncommon."
