The State Bureau of Investigation has verified the identity of a second man charged in connection with a Friday evening shootout on Slaughter Street that left one dead and at least one lawman injured.
An investigation report released today by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office listed "SBI Suspect 2" as Steve Green, but did not include details about the man.
Little else has been made public about the incident since the Goldsboro Police Department and WCSO confirmed that about 10 minutes before 10 p.m. Friday, members of the Wayne County Sheriff's Office Aggressive Criminal Enforcement Team and the GPD Selective Enforcement Unit attempted to execute a search warrant at 712 Slaughter St. and were fired upon.
Another suspect, Thomas Arthur Austin Jr., 31, is being held under a $1,000,000 bond and faces five counts of attempted murder.
The name of the suspect shot and killed by police in the exchange has not yet been released, and officials within each department are requesting that the names of the officers involved -- the men have been identified -- be withheld due to safety concerns.
Maj. Theresa Chiero, GPD commander of investigations, said each suspect will be charged individually once they are identified, and as evidence and accounts of the event are compiled.
As with any officer-involved shooting resulting in a fatality, the SBI is investigating the incident as well.
