Those traveling downtown will need to be wary of another closing due to construction on Goldsboro's Center Street Streetscape project. Beginning Thursday, the intersection of Mulberry and Center streets will be closed for about three weeks.
Mulberry Street, which has previously allowed eastbound travel, will be closed to all traffic and a "turnabout" will be installed on northbound Center Street to allow drivers to turn around and travel south along Center.
The recommendation to close the intersection came from the project contractor, Daniels and Daniels Construction, due to safety concerns for drivers heading westbound despite signs indicating the road was closed.
"We were having people go completely through the intersection on a one-lane road," Goldsboro Public Information Officer Kim Best said this morning.
Because of concerns with the frequency of those violations, evidenced by an upswing in traffic tickets at that intersection, the contractor asked that the intersection be closed entirely until work on that end of the block was completed.
The closing further compounds the traffic situation downtown as the entire 200 north block of Center Street has been closed since May 15 and there have been rolling closures at the Ash Street roundabout during business hours since late July.
