The Goldsboro Rescue and Emergency Medical Service squads celebrated their 59th anniversary recently at the Wayne Shrine Club.
The Goldsboro unit is the second oldest organization of its kind in North Carolina. It was organized in 1953. Its first call came on March 21, 1953, and was answered by former Assistant Fire Chief Red Davis.
At the celebration Saturday night, Gordon Joyner was recognized for services above and beyond the call of duty.
Allen and Albert Jones, the first black members of the squad, were recognized for their 40 years of dedicated service.
