As the holidays end people will be faced with the task of cleaning up and disposing of gift-wrapping paper, boxes, furniture and electronics that have been replaced with newer models and their Christmas trees.
Wayne County residents will be able to dispose of their Christmas trees free of charge through January at the county landfill at Dudley only. The trees will not be accepted at any of the county's 13 convenience sites.
The landfill and convenience center sites will operate on their normal schedules this week, but will be closed Jan. 2 for the New Year's holiday.
The landfill is open from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. It is closed on Sunday and Wednesday.
Convenience center sites are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday and are closed on Sunday and Wednesday.
Most paper items and cardboard can be recycled at all of the convenience centers. However, boxes should be flattened before being placed in the containers.
The paper products must be clean and mixed paper -- newspaper, junk mail, cardboard and others -- are allowed. Paper items not accepted for recycling include wax-coated paper, milk cartons, soap boxes, pizza boxes or any paper that is dirty or soiled.
Electronics are accepted at the Dudley and Pikeville convenience centers only.
Acceptable items include computers and peripherals, cell phones, corded and cordless phones, answering machines, pagers, fax machines, adding machines, typewriters, PDA's, data cartridges, digital cameras, camcorders, VCRs, stereos, cables and circuit boards.
Appliances (white goods) may be recycled at the landfill and at convenience ceGrantham, Mitchell Road, Patetown, Pikeville, Rosewood and Seven Springs.
Doors must be removed from freezers and refrigerators and the appliances cannot contain any food.
Furniture and carpet may be disposed of by homeowners only at the landfill or at the Gran-tham, Patetown, Pikeville, Rosewood and Seven Springs convenience centers.
