WEMCHS wins math contest

When time was called and the pencils were down, Wayne Early/Middle College High School's team became repeat champs of the County Math Contest.

This was the 22nd year for the competition, held at Wayne Community College, has traditionally been a part of the Wayne Regional Agricultural Fair but was rescheduled this year due to inclement weather. It was co-sponsored by WCC with Wayne County Public Schools and the fair.

WCC math instructors Katina Davis and Michael Dubrowsky administered and scored the test and awarded prizes and money to the winning teams.

The WEMCHS team of Zach Daniels and Irene Tsui amassed the highest score on the test's nine short-answer format in the allotted 40 minutes. Prize for the team was $200.

Seven teams were in the contest.

Rankings for the remaining competitors included Camerokn Armbrester and Ty Sullivan from Wayne School of Engineering, receiving a $100 award for second place; Benito Avila and Hidematsu Sueki from Eastern Wayne High School, $50 for third place; Spring Creek High School's James Beavers and Ryan Viverette, $25 for fourth place; and Dakota Hersey and Beth Stovall from Rosewood High School, fifth place. There was no monetary award for the fifth place winner.

Brandon Cochrane and Zach Grantham from Southern Wayne High School, Avery Anderson and Brantley Collins from Charles B. Aycock High School and Shacarla Exum and Tyreek Flowers from Goldsboro High School also participated.
