Students turn ceramic art into community service project

Northeast Elementary School students are turning an art project into a community service project.
Cindy Kimble's art classes were enlisted to help students from Wayne Early/Middle College High School in an honors leadership development class. Seniors Heath Radford, Mallory Frederick and Danielle Brown worked with the elementary students to create a piece of ceramic art to give to 37 residents of Countryside Assisted Living in Pikeville later this month.
After the clay was fired in the kiln, Mrs. Kimble explained, sweet treats were added to fill the ceramic pots.
The fifth-graders enjoyed working on the "pinch pot" clay project, she added.
"Their ceramic pieces range from soap dishes to ring holders, cups to bowls," she said. "The students hope their artwork will be useful to the older folks for holding their jewelry, change, soap or vitamins. ... Our goal with this collaborative event is to reach out to the older generation, and make sure they are remembered as an important part of our community."
