The trial of former Marine Cpl. Cesar Laurean began today with Judge Osmond Smith hearing pre-trial motions from lawyers on both sides. Laurean is charged with first-degree murder in the 2007 death of Marine Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach. After hearing motions, Smith recessed until 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, at which time jury selection is expected to begin. The trial was moved to Wayne County because of pre-trial publicity in Onslow County, and Smith and the lawyers indicated today their continued concern that untainted jurors be selected.
