Andre Devon Weeks

Goldsboro police have arrested a suspect in a New Year's Day murder outside an East Wilson Street home.

Andre Devon Weeks, 26, of Evergreen Avenue, is being held without bond in the Wayne County Jail.

Police Sgt. Chad Calloway said Weeks was picked up after investigators received a tip about his whereabouts.

He was taken into custody without incident, the sergeant said.

"We located him at a residence," Calloway said. "I don't think there were any problems (with the arrest) whatsoever."

The sergeant said he could not say whether Weeks had talked with investigators about the shooting.

"We just picked him up and turned him over to the Wayne County Jail," Calloway said. "I won't go into whether he talked, yet."

Weeks is accused of the murder of Larry Donnell Mathis Jr., who was 34 when he was shot following an argument in the early morning hours of Jan. 1.

Neighbors in the area called 911 after hearing shots fired, and police first found a crowd of people on East Woodrow Street, then found Mathis unresponsive in the 400 block of Wilson Street, according to police reports at the time.

Police Sgt. Chad Calloway said last week that police believe the motive for the shooting was a "senseless argument."

Weeks had just been indicted this month on charges of assault inflicting serious bodily injury and accused habitual felon status.

Weeks' first appearance was held in Wayne County District Court.
