Blood donations historically decline during the summer months due to donors taking vacation and summer activities. But the demand for blood often increases due to more people traveling on the roads and people opting for elective surgeries during the summer time.
The Carolinas Blood Region, of which Wayne County is a part, provides lifesaving blood to patients in 103 hospitals. That means about 1,600 people need to give blood or platelets each week to meet the demand.
Donors must be at least 17, or 16 with parental consent, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good general health. Blood can be given every 56 days.
The following is the June bloodmobile schedule for the Wayne County Chapter of the American Red Cross:
June 15: Pizza Hut, Wayne Memorial Drive, from 2 to 6:30 p.m. and Seven Springs Baptist Church from 3:30 to 8 p.m.
June 18: Wayne Memorial Hospital from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Lowe's from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
June 29: Mount Olive Family Medical Center from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
June 30: Wayne Community College from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
