Longtime developer Bridgers dies at 83

Former Goldsboro City Councilman and businessman Brutus Stallings "Chubby" Bridgers, 83, died Wednesday at Wake Medical Center.
Bridgers, known for his interest in fine horses and cars, played football at Duke University and was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. He ran a vehicle restoration business, Chub's Classic Cars.
Bridgers bred a champion hackney horse, CH Night Prowler, that was well known on the Coast Plains hackney circuit in the 1970s, and restored many vintage autos, one he sold to National Football League star Deion Sanders.
Bridgers and his wife, Lillian Overman Bridgers, founded the Cloth Barn in the 1950s. Bridgers was himself a retired building contractor.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul United Methodist Church with a private interment at Willow Dale Cemetery.
