Wayne School of Engineering students, from left, Dorian Wences, Steven Morton, Anthony Dobson and Vicky Bailey look over the plans for the model bridge they plan to build for the North Carolina Department of Transportation State Bridge Building Competition. The balsa wood model bridge the team members built for the regional competition withstood 33 pounds of pressure.

A team of students from Wayne School of Engineering were among regional winners in the N.C. Department of Transportation Statewide Model Bridge Building Competition, held recently in Raleigh.

Each school team was judged in four categories, including written report, oral presentation, design drawing and model efficiency.

About 100 students from the eight winning schools will now compete at the statewide level on April 17, also in Raleigh. Winners at each level will receive cash prizes donated by Carolina's Associated General Contractors and the American Council of Engineering Companies, which also sponsor the competition.

The contest is designed to create a greater awareness of careers in and services provided by the transportation industry. The event emphasizes the development of math and science skills, while providing an opportunity to use problem-solving strategies and critical thinking, enhance communication skills and apply research and presentation skills.

Members of the local team included Anthony Dobson, Vicky Bailey, Kristin Hudleston, Steven Morton, Colter Swan, Bernard Green, Dorian Wences and A.J. Lane.
