A Cherry Hospital staff member was "inadvertently" injured Friday while trying to transport patients on the grounds, officials said Monday.
An internal investigation is being conducted into the incident, said Mark Van Sciver, spokesman for the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services.
"They were in the process of moving patients from one residential building to the treatment mall and a patient began to act out," he said. "There were a group of four health care techs, five people, trying to de-escalate the situation. ... The patient inadvertently hit the health care tech that was trying to de-escalate the situation. She may have been inadvertently injured."
Van Sciver would not confirm the extent of the staffer's injuries.
"This is an ongoing investigation at this point," he said. "(She) was taken to the hospital to my knowledge. We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to the employee that was injured, on behalf of the department and Cherry Hospital."
