Despite early Saturday morning temperatures in the high 20s, Tayzlie Tripple, 10, and Townsend Tripple, 8, still got a workout with their tennis coach, Alan Cuddington, at Herman Park.

Forecasters say the coldest stretch of weather in years, if not decades, could be heading for North Carolina this week. While temperatures won't be falling to record lows, the National Weather Service says the duration of the cold weather is unusual. Highs are expected to be in the upper 30s with lows in the mid-20s for the next few days in eastern North Carolina, but in the western part of the state the cold snap could last up to two weeks -- the longest since January 1977. Forecaster say once temperatures dip below freezing, they might not get above 32 degrees again until mid-week. The weather service says check pipes and bring pets inside.
