Pedestrian hit while crossing Berkeley Boulevard

Goldsboro firefighters and Wayne County EMS personnel help a pedestrian after he was struck by a car on Berkeley Boulevard near Cashwell Drive this morning. The patient was transported to Wayne Memorial Hospital with head lacerations and a possible injury to his left leg.

A man walking across Berkeley Boulevard was struck by a car near but not at its intersection with Cashwell Drive about 9 this morning.
Charles Samuel Mason, age unknown, was crossing Berkeley, leaving the Chevron gas station and heading east, when he was allegedly hit by a gray Ford driven by Olga Markowitsch.
Goldsboro Police Department Cpl. Steve Lusk said he heard the sound that came from Mason being hit by the car.
"Then I saw it in my rearview mirror," he said.
Mason landed about 30 feet from where he was struck, police said.
Ms. Markowitsch, whose age also was unknown, was driving south on Berkeley Boulevard and was in the left turning lane when she allegedly hit Mason.
Police said Ms. Markowitsch was likely traveling at about 35 mph.
Mason was transported by ambulance to Wayne Memorial Hospital.
The extent of his injuries was not known. At press time, he was listed in the hospital's patient information system as being in the emergency room..
Damage to Ms. Marko-witsch's vehicle included a broken windshield.
Authorities said they did not know yet whether Ms. Markowitsch or Mason will be charged.
