These students will compete in Southeast Regional Science Fair

Wayne County Public Schools recently held its annual districtwide science fair, with 12 award recipients now qualified to travel to the regional competition in Wilmington on Saturday.

Approximately 50 projects were displayed from three divisions -- K-2, grades 3-5, middle school and high school. Middle and high school divisions were divided into earth, life, physical and technological areas, plus a team division for hgh schools.

Winners came from 11 schools, with 12 projects chosen to compete the Southeast Regional Fair at UNC-Wilmington. Local winners received a ribbon and will have their entry fee paid for the next event.

Winners in each category include:

K-2 Division: First place, Jake Volk, Meadow Lane Elementary School

3-5 Division: First, Shianne Blakeney, Meadow Lane; second, Micah Sherard, Meadow Lane; and third, Alex Hunt, Carver Elementary

6-8 Division: Biological -- first, Myra Waheed, Norwayne Middle; second, Jasmine Jones, Dillard Middle; and third, Debbie Mitchell, Greenwood

Earth -- first, Jacob Guthrie, Rosewood Middle; second, Sawyer Strand, Mount Olive Middle; and third, Taylor Raynor, Grantham

Technological -- first, Anna Cooke, Rosewood Middle; second, Sam Henderson, Grantham; Third, Nicholas Barfield and Daniel Coker, Eastern Wayne Elementary.

Physical -- first, Tara Simmons, Norwayne; second, Jacob Harrison, Norwayne; and third, Marichell Arnold, Brogden Middle

9-12 Division: Biological -- first, Benjamin Ogburn, Wayne School of Engineering

Earth -- first, Kristin Hudelston, Wayne School of Engineering

Technological -- first, Sarah Moore, Wayne School of Engineering

Physical -- first, Danielle McBarron, Wayne School of Engineering

Team -- first, Matt Davis and Jimmy Bundy, Wayne School of Engineering.
